hi, I’m Mary
I’ve spent 20+ years in hospitality sales, advertising, digital marketing, and PR — writing the words that get people to book, buy, show up, and come back. Now I teach solo business owners to do it for themselves.
what changed everything
In 2026 I finished my master’s at Texas Tech. My research asked why smart, capable solo business owners go quiet online — the ones who are excellent at the work itself and somehow can’t bring themselves to talk about it.
I collected 97 responses from business users of social media and analyzed the 66 that were complete. The answer wasn’t that they needed to post more. It was three things: not knowing what to say, real discomfort with self-promotion, and no way to tell whether any of it was working.

post with a clear strategy tied to business goals.
34%
of independent professionals find self-promotion uncomfortable, against 13% of everyone else.
#1
most-wanted resource: a way to know whether the effort is actually working.
Everything on this site was built out of those findings.
the person behind it
Mary Margaret to my family — though hearing my full name still makes me feel like I’m about to get in trouble, so the rest of the world just calls me Mary.
Over the past 20+ years I’ve worked in hospitality sales, advertising, digital marketing, and PR for a wide range of clients and industries. The projects I’m proudest of all share one thread: in every one of them, I was directly serving people.
That was the nugget that became Make Words Do Things. I kept watching capable people go all in on good ideas and fall short of them — not for lack of talent, but for lack of clear communication and a plan behind it.
I’m a native Texas girl: born in Houston, then Midland, then Austin. I came to Lubbock for Texas Tech, and it turned out West Texas wide open spaces and sunsets that could only be designed by God himself speak to my soul. I’m right where I should be.
I’m a dog mom to a beautiful Weimaraner named Rooster, a Fox Red Lab named Rusty, and a Great Pyrenees/St. Bernard mix named Cooper. Follow me anywhere on social and you’ll meet them.
“Communication is almost always the difference between success and failure. Having the right words matters.”
how I work
My clients never wonder whether they’re being hustled. Operating service-first means the revenue takes care of itself.
If I’m not the best choice for what you need, I’ll be the first to say so. Neither of us wins if I’m the wrong fit.
The digital landscape changes daily. It’s my job to keep up and bring new options forward, even for the smallest businesses.
The goal is a system you can run without me. If you never need to hire me again, I did the job right.
This one might matter most. When you really know who you are, what you do, and who it’s for, the question of what to post stops being a question. I teach people to rely on what they already know to be true, so they can get out of their own way.
